The Ancient Coin Collectors Guild has become a driving force in the ongoing effort to protect coin collectors and museums in which coins are stored from being forced to give up these items to foreign governments under the premise the coins are the cultural patrimony of the claimant nation. — Richard Giedroyc, World Coin News April 26, 2010

ACCG files motion for summary judgement

Motion for Summary judgement filed in ACCG test case.

The ACCG has filed a Motion for Summary Judgement in the long running forfeiture case pending in a US District Court in Baltimore.  The Guild’s motion asks for the Court to order to the return of the Guild’s coins because expert testimony about the circulation of ancient coins and legal imports under EU law rebut the government’s case for forfeiture.  The Guild also asks the court to reconsider prior rulings about the burden of proof based on the Guild’s rights to due process.  The government is currently expected to respond to the motion by August 1st.  The government is expected to file its own motion for summary judgment at the same time.
