July 13, 2005
St. Louise de Marillac School will host a Book Fair at Barnes and Noble at South Hills Village, 301 South Hills Village, Pittsburgh, PA on the weekend of August 26, 27, and 28, 2005. Saturday is dedicated specifically to the study of Classics, Latin language, and numismatics. The event will feature a COINS AND CLASSICS theme. The event will feature presentations from St. Louise de Marillac School students and teachers. There will be skits to promote Latin, musical performances, and retellings of ancient myths. There will be an exhibit and presentation of the Ancient Coin Museum which was developed by teacher Zee Ann Poerio with help from Ancient Coins for Education (ACE), the American Numismatic Association (ANA), Harlan J. Berk, Ltd., and numismatists across the country. The Ancient Coin Museum is used as a teaching tool to discuss the origins of money while incorporating languages through the inscriptions of ancient coins, as well as ancient history, art, myth, and its influence on modern coinage from around the world. The museum exhibit features coins from ancient Greece and Rome, as well as artifacts from the 1st to 3rd Century AD. Mrs. Poerio is a Director of Ancient Coins for Education (ACE), a member of the ACCG Education and Youth Programs Task Force, and Vice Chair of the Excellence Through Classics Committee of the American Classics League. In conjunction with this event, Wayne G. Sayles, Ancient Coin Collectors Guild (ACCG) Executive Director and numismatic scholar, will deliver an illustrated presentation titled “Ancient Coin Collecting: Hobby with a History.” Sayles will also be signing copies of titles from his Ancient Coin Collecting series and of the monograph Classical Deception.
