The Ancient Coin Collectors Guild has become a driving force in the ongoing effort to protect coin collectors and museums in which coins are stored from being forced to give up these items to foreign governments under the premise the coins are the cultural patrimony of the claimant nation. — Richard Giedroyc, World Coin News April 26, 2010

HR-1047 Correction

Information reported by the Thomas site (http://thomas.loc.gov) and by the Washington Post online regarding the passage of HR-1047 appears to have been slightly premature (see our earlier news item on this subject).

October 18, 2004

Peter Tompa, the ACCG Task Force Leader for Legislative Affairs, has determined that HR-1047 has not actually received final Senate approval. Although the conference committee report was approved, the final version of the bill was apparently not one of those items concluded in a flurry of last minute activity before the adjournment of Congress. The issue will be considered on or after November 16, when the session resumes. It is fully expected that the bill will then be approved by the full Senate in its current state, as approved by the conference committee. In other words, coins will not be exempted from the antiquity import restrictions.
