Senator urges consideration for collectors

Senator Charles E. Schumer (D-NY) has formally asked Assistant Secretary for Educational and Cultural Affairs, Dina Powell, to consider the consequences of import restrictions on American citizens who study and appreciate the richness of China's culture.

Senator Schumer, in response to an appeal from many constituents, including members of the Ancient Coin Collectors Guild, has forwarded to us a copy of his July 12, 2006 letter to Secretary Powell. The State Department has yet to release its decision on the request for import restrictions considered a year and a half ago by the Cultural Property Advisory Committee. The letter and its cover are provided below:
