The Ancient Coin Collectors Guild has become a driving force in the ongoing effort to protect coin collectors and museums in which coins are stored from being forced to give up these items to foreign governments under the premise the coins are the cultural patrimony of the claimant nation. — Richard Giedroyc, World Coin News April 26, 2010

Strong Collector Opposition to Greek MOU request

Collectors braved the new comment system to make their views known in Washington

By Wayne G. Sayles |

Thanks to those coin collectors and dealers who commented on the Greek MOU at the government's online comment page.   Our best estimate is that numbers approaching the 1100 who commented on the Cyprus MOU back in 2007 used the Regulations.gov website to make their concerns about the Greek MOU known.  We recognize that there are fewer collectors of Greek coins than Roman, for example, and that this government website was more cumbersome to use than the ACCG fax wizard.   Consequently, everyone’s  effort to raise awareness of the collector view is very much appreciated.  In the final analysis, the overall comments were approximately 3 to 1 in opposition to the MOU.  Comment from the collector community is extremely important in that it demonstrates a consensus among the fraternity and a breadth of views for the Advisory Committee and the U.S. State Department to consider.
